Mercia Fund Management and Finance Wales lead significant investment in Electronic Design Automation start-up

Henley in Arden — April 29, 2014. Thalia Design Automation Limited (Thalia) today announced completion of its A round funding and imminent beta availability of its range of innovation Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. Thalia will provide chip designers with a new generation of tools for optimising analogue, mixed signal and power designs.

Electronic (Silicon) chips are either digital or analogue circuits (with combinations referred to as mixed signal). The design of analogue and mixed signal circuits is traditionally regarded as a black art, needing highly skilled and scarce engineering resource, relatively long design cycles and often multiple design iterations to get to a production product.

There is a major opportunity for more design automation in this sector. EDA tools needed to simplify and speed up design process have seen little advance in the last 30 years. Thalia is about to change this with the launch of a new generation of analogue EDA tools focused on helping designers to optimise and perfect their designs. Optimisations tasks which typically took several days to weeks to complete can now be performed in a matter of hours.

Automating optimisation of circuits involves considering million’s of combinations of numerous different component parameters to select the right combination with gives the best circuit performance. Thalia has developed sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms which can rapidly seek the optimum solution. These tools will not only assist engineers’ produce better designs but also greatly increase their productivity and reduce chip design time-scales. A further benefit is that the toolsets can be used to rapidly retarget existing designs to alternative silicon foundries for cost reduction and sourcing flexibility.

Led by Dr Rodger Sykes, Chairman and Sowmyan Rajagopalan, CEO, Thalia has now completed this initial equity funding round with Mercia Fund Management and Finance Wales. In addition the company has secured grant support from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and the Welsh Government.

Nature Based EDA gets funded – EE time Europe

Analog EDA startup Thalia Design Automation Ltd., founded by a former CAD engineering manager for Micrel, has raised $1 million in a mix of equity funding and grant support. The Series A funding round was led by Mercia Fund Management and Finance Wales.

Thalia is developing EDA tools that use behavior algorithms from nature for the rapid optimization of analog and mixed-signal performance and power consumption. The money raised will be used to expand at Thalia’s headquarters in Cwmbran, Wales, and in Bangalore, India and to support initial customer engagements for the company’s tools.

The company was founded in 2011 by Sowmyan Rajagopalan, who serves as CEO and CTO. Rajagopalan had previously worked as CAD engineering manager for Micrel Inc. (San Jose, Calif.), according to his LinkedIn entry. Rodger Sykes, a UK semiconductor industry veteran serves the company as chairman.

The company has developed the Amalia analog circuit design optimizer and the Emera power device design optimizer. “Thalia has taken a number of algorithms from nature – such as methods used by ants and bees to search for food – and applied them to optimizing design results. The power tool works alongside layout tools and so works at the physical level to minimize size and power. The analog tool works at the variable component and functional level and can home in on an optimum solution much faster than traditional approaches,” said Sykes.

The AI methods used by Thalia involve considering million’s of combinations of multiple component parameters to select the combination with gives the best circuit performance. Optimizations that typically took several days to weeks to complete can now be performed in a matter of hours, the company said in a statement. The tools can be used to support the retargeting of existing designs to alternative silicon foundries for cost reduction and sourcing flexibility.

The Amalia tool offers a 10 to 50 times speed up of performance verification test for analog/RF designs as well as optimisation of physical area constraints and 3- and 6-sigma Monte Carlo statistical verification. Emera provides nominal, PVT corner and 3- and 6-sigma optimisation analysis in minutes, the company claims.

“We will start with a mixed license and service business model to help demonstrate that our tools do provide the benefits we claim,” said Sykes. As a result Thalia is also offering analog circuit design and porting of designs to alternative foundries. The company has a staff of eight people split between Cwmbran and Bangalore.

In addition to funding from Mercia Fund Management and Finance Wales the company has secured grant support from the UK government’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and the Welsh government.
